Ertharin Cousin (* 1957 ) is an American lawyer and diplomat . From 2012 to 2017, she succeeded Josette Sheeran as the twelfth Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program . She then became Payne Distinguished Professor at Stanford University at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies , Distinguished Fellow at the Center on Food Security and the Environment and the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law , and Distinguished Fellow at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Trustee of the Power of Nutrition Board of Directors .

From 2009 to 2012 she served under President Barack Obama as United States Ambassador of the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome and as Head of the United States Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome . Before that, she worked in various positions, first as a member of the Democratic Party and then in the food industry and related non-profit organizations. In 2014, Forbes Magazine rated her 45th of the 100 Most Influential Women in the World. and by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2014.

Live and act

Cousin grew up with her three sisters in the Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois . Her mother Anna Cousin worked in the social sector, her father was involved in a neighborhood initiative. In 1971 she was inducted into Lane Technical High School . She graduated from high school in 1975. She received her BA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1979 and her law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1982 under former US Secretary of State Dean Rusk . Cousin then worked as Assistant Attorney General and Western Regional Office Director for the Illinois Attorney General in Chicago and as Deputy Director on the Chicago Ethics Board . She then was Director of Governmental Affairs at AT&T . In 1993, she moved to Washington, DC and became Deputy Chief of Staff at the Democratic National Committee . The following year she became a member of the Bill Clinton administration as a White House Liaison in the US State Department , where she received a Meritorious Service Award . She was Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State while preparing for the 1996 Olympic Games . In 1996, she became the Clinton-Gore Presidential Campaign Leader for Illinois. After the election, she became Vice-President of Government, Community and Political Affairs for the Clinton administration in 1997 . In 1997, Cousin was appointed to the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development . At the same time, she was Vice-President for Government and Community Affairs for the supermarket chain Jewel . In 1999, Albertsons LLC bought Jewel and Cousin became Group Vice President of Public Affairs at Albertsons and then Senior Vice President of Public Affairs . While at Albertsons, she was also President and Chair of the company's philanthropic foundation. She was also the official spokesperson for Albertson .

In 2002, Cousin joined America's Second Harvest Board of Directors . In 2004 she became Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer there . This included activities related to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which distributed 62 million pounds of food. During her time there, sales grew from $ 20 million to $ 56 million. In 2006, she founded the consulting firm The Polk Street Group in Chicago and became its chairman. In 2009 she handed over the chairmanship to her son.

On June 19, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated her for the post of United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome . She was confirmed by the Senate on August 7 and sworn in on August 17. This post also included the posts of US Ambassador to Italy and US Ambassador to the Holy See. From 2019 onwards, Cousin served as Chair of the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in the Task Force on Humanitarian Access , along with Co-Chairs Cory Booker and Todd Young . Cousin is divorced and has one son, Maurice.

Cousin is a laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois and received the Order of Lincoln (the highest order in the state of Illinois) in 2015 for her social work. Forbes Magazine had Cousin on the Forbes list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women for several years. including 48th in 2016. In 2016 she received the Humanitarian Award from Action Against Hunger . In addition, she was named one of the TIME 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine .
