Andrea Leeds (born August 18, 1914 in Butte , Montana , † May 21, 1984 in Palm Springs , California ; actually: Antoinette M. Lees ) was an Oscar- nominated American actress who enjoyed success in the 1930s especially in romantic movie dramas.

Life

Andrea Leeds began her career in 1933 as a small actress, initially under her real name. In 1936 she had her first significant role in the two-generation lumberjack saga Take What You Can Get , begun by Howard Hawks and completed by William Wyler , for which Walter Brennan received his first Oscar and in the Frances Farmer one of theirs most notable acting performances. Andrea Leeds was also able to attract attention in this environment and got her first leading role in 1937 in the politically charged drama It Could Happen to You! in which she and her partner togetherAlan Baxter is heavily responsible for the death of his adoptive father.

Andrea Leed's next film, Stage Entrance (1937), a drama about a group of theater aspirants, marked the high point of her career, although here she only played a supporting role alongside stars like Katharine Hepburn , Ginger Rogers and Adolphe Menjou, as well as emerging talents like Lucille Ball , Eve Arden and Ann Miller played. As an overly sensitive young woman who cannot cope with the rigors of the profession she aspires to and who ultimately commits suicide, Andrea Leeds touched both critics and audiences. The film garnered a total of four Oscar nominations, including Andrea Leeds as the only representative of the high-profile cast of the stage entrance .

Andrea Leeds was considered for the role of "Melanie" in Gone With the Wind (1939), but it went to Olivia de Havilland . This was followed by a few leading roles in relatively successful films such as Music for Life and Swanee River (both 1939). A thriller with occult plot elements, Earthbound , was Andrea Leed's last film in 1940 before she retired into private life after marrying a multimillionaire.

She died of cancer at the age of 69.
