biography
Andreas Gößling studied German literature , journalism and political science . For his dissertation on Thomas Bernhard's novels, he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . After his doctorate as Dr. phil. (1984) he received a postdoctoral grant from the German Research Association for a three-year research project on Robert Walser's novels.
Andreas Gößling became known as an author with his two novels about the culture of the ancient Maya , Die Maya-Priesterin (2001) and Im Tempel des Regengottes (2003), about which the ZDF for its series “RomanWelten” the documentary film “ The riddles of the Maya. A journey through time to Guatemala ”shot. Several of Gößling's works deal with Haitian voodoo as a novel or non-fiction book .
Characteristic of Gößling's novels is the combination of historical accuracy and mythical-fantastic elements, as well as literary complexity and suggestive suspense. Gößling has undertaken numerous research trips, mainly in Latin America and Southeast Asia. The author has also addressed European history and mythology several times in his novels, especially in his great novels Faust, der Magier (2007) and, for young readers, OPUS (2 volumes, 2010).
In his non-fiction and cultural history books, Gößling repeatedly emphasizes the intercultural similarities between archetypes, mythical figures and magical or religious rituals, including in Drachenwelten (2003), a large-scale comparison of the creation myths of various cultures and epochs.
Andreas Gößling is married to the author and translator Anne Löhr-Gößling and lives in Berlin, where he also heads MayaMedia publishing and agency.
