Hans Geulen

Hans Geulen (born March 23, 1932 in Aachen ; † September 24, 2017 in Bonn ) was a German German studies scholar .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1955, Geulen studied German, history, philosophy and geography at the universities of Marburg , Innsbruck and Bonn . With a dissertation on "Homo Faber" by Max Frisch as an example of modern storytelling, he received his doctorate in Bonn in 1962. In 1963 Geulen became a scientific assistant to Günter Weydt in Münster, after a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation , he was able to qualify for his habilitation in 1971 with a comprehensive presentation on the “narrative art of the early modern era”. After substituting professorships at the Universities of Göttingen , Saarbrücken and Stuttgart , Geulen became Scientific Adviser and Professor for Modern German Literature at the German Institute of the University of Münster , which he held until his retirement in 1997.

The children of Hans Geulen are the literary scholar Eva Geulen and the historian Christian Geulen .

The research and teaching activities of Geulen encompassed all modern literature from the 16th century to the present day. His publications dealt with the literature of the Baroque era, the novel of romance , Jean Paul and over again with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . In 2005 he published an autobiographical story entitled "Early End Times".
