Andreas Willi

Andreas Willi (* 1972 in Altstätten ) is a British Indo-Europeanist of Swiss origin.

Andreas Willi studied Classical Philology , Slavic Studies and Comparative Linguistics at the Universities of Basel , Lausanne , Friborg and Ann Arbor . From 1998 to 2001 he was a Charles Oldham Graduate Scholar at the University of Oxford , where he also received his doctorate . He then worked as a senior assistant for Classical Philology at the University of Basel and at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma until he returned to the University of Oxford in 2005 as Diebold Professor of Comparative Philology .

In 2020 Willi was elected to the British Academy .

Willis' main research interests are sociolinguistics and dialectology of the ancient languages ​​of the Mediterranean region and comparative etymology of Latin, Greek and Indo-European. He has written numerous articles and reviews as well as the monographs The Languages ​​of Aristophanes: Aspects of Linguistic Variation in Classical Attic Greek (Oxford 2003, Paperback 2007) and Sikelismos: Language, Literature and Society in Sicily, Greece (8th – 5th century BC). Chr.) (Basel 2008).
