Andrei Nikolajewitsch Serdjukow ( Russian Андрей Николаевич Сердюков; born March 4, 1962 in the village of Uglegorsky , Tatinsky Province , Rostov Oblast , Russian Soviet Socialist Federative Republic , USSR ) is a Colonel General of the Russian Armed Forces and Commander in Chief of the Russian Air Force . Due to his involvement in the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine , Serdyukov has been on the Ukrainian government's sanctions list since May 2017.

Life

Serdyukov graduated from the Airborne School in Ryazan in 1983 . After graduation, he was appointed by decree as the commander of the reconnaissance regiment stationed in Gəncə (then Kirovabad) in Azerbaijan and subordinated to the 104th Soviet Airborne Division. Over time, he rose from deputy company commander to battalion commander .

In 1993 Serdyukov received further military training from the Frunze Military Academy . He then became deputy commander of a regiment assigned to the 76th Guards Air Strike Division. Between 1994 and 1996 he took part in the First Chechen War.

In 1995, at the age of 33, Serdyukov took command of the 237th Guards Air Raid Regiment. In the following two years he advanced from a simple chief of staff to commander of the 104th Air Strike Division. During the Kosovo war he was deputy brigade commander of the Russian units.

From 2002 to 2011 Serdyukov commanded the 138th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade, 106th Guards Air Strike Brigade and the 5th Combined Arms Army. In 2009 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in Moscow . In October 2013 Serdyukov was promoted to chief of staff and first deputy commander of the Southern Military District .

In March 2014, Serdyukov led the Russian troops occupying the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea . In addition, he headed the Russian units under the code name “Sedov” during the military conflict in Donbass in August 2015. In October 2016, Serdyukov was promoted to commander-in-chief of the Russian airborne troops by decree of the Russian president with the rank of colonel-general.

In September 2017, Serdyukov was involved in a car accident in Murmansk Oblast in northern Russia . On a highway, his car collided with an oncoming vehicle and rolled over several times. He got away with minor injuries.
