Andrei Sergejewitsch Monin , Russian Андре́й Серге́евич Мо́нин , (born July 2, 1921 in Moscow ; † September 22, 2007 ibid) was a Russian physicist, applied mathematician and oceanographer .

His father SA Monin was an assistant professor at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. Monin studied at the Lomonosov University (Mekh-Mat Faculty) and after graduating in 1942 was a meteorologist in the Soviet Army and most recently in the Central Institute for Weather Forecast of the Army and continued his studies at the Lomonosov University from 1946 to 1949 and became at Andrei Kolmogorov with a dissertation on atmospheric turbulence doctorate . From 1951 he was at the Institute for Geophysics of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in the Department of Atmospheric Physics (later its own institute). In 1956 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate) on turbulent diffusion. In 1963 he became a professor. From 1965 to 1987 he was director of the PP Shirshov Institute for Oceanography of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, which he expanded into an internationally respected research institute for oceanography.

He researched turbulence and in particular the statistical theory of turbulence developed in the Soviet Union by Kolmogorov and Alexander Michailowitsch Obuchow , especially with applications in meteorology and oceanography ( Monin-Obuchow theory ). His monograph with Akiwa Moissejewitsch Jaglom on statistical turbulence theory is a standard work. With Obuchow he developed a self-similar theory of turbulence in liquid layers such as atmospheric boundary layers (here the Monin-Obukhov stability length is named after both).

He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2000), the Russian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences (1976) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1973) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Gothenburg. In 1993 he received the Alexander Friedmann Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences and in 1980 the Soviet State Prize.
