Andres Gerber (born April 26, 1973 ) is a former Swiss football player . Andres Gerber retired from active professional football in the 2009/10 season and is currently employed as head of sport and assistant coach at Axpo Super League club FC Thun .
Career as an active footballer
As a junior, Gerber played at FC Belp and at Young Boys Bern (YB for short). At YB, he also made the leap into professional football. Further stations in his career were FC Lausanne-Sport (1998–2000) and Grasshopper Zurich (2000–2003).
In 2003 he moved to the Bernese Oberland club FC Thun, with whom he celebrated his greatest successes. From 2002 to 2008 the midfielder played in the highest Swiss league, the Super League, and also played two games in the Champions League with FC Thun , one of them despite an Achilles tendon injury.
After FC Thun was relegated to the Challenge League in 2008, Gerber completed 15 games as team captain in 2008/09 before injuring himself again. This incident had a significant impact on his further career.
Professional transition phase
A job odyssey began for Andres Gerber . First he assisted the then coach Hansruedi Baumann during his injury break , and after his dismissal he acted as head coach until the end of the 2008/09 season. Under his leadership, the previously rather hapless team won two out of three games, which made him recommended for continued employment.
Career as a sports director and assistant coach
On June 5, 2009, FC Thun hired Murat Yakin as a new coach. The 36-year-old Andres Gerber, who had not yet fully recovered at this point, decided to retire from active professional football. FC Thun finally hired the former player as head of sport and assistant coach, a role that he still holds at the moment.
