Space flights
Flight with STS-46
On July 31, 1992, the mission took off from launch pad 39-B of the Kennedy Space Center at a height of 426 kilometers. After solving some technical problems, the European platform EURECA was suspended. The US-Italian tethered satellite TSS-1 was also suspended, but had to be retrieved because the rope only rolled about a tenth of its length (20 kilometers). Smaller experiments were also held. After 7 days, 23 hours and 15 minutes, Allen's first mission returned to KSC on August 8, 1992.
Flight with STS-62
On March 4, 1994, the research mission started from launch pad 39-B in the Kennedy Space Center . After performing the experiments, Allen's second mission returned to Earth. The landing in Florida took place on March 18, 1994. Allen and the rest of the crew had been underway for 13 days, 23 hours and 16 minutes.
Flight with STS-75
On February 22, 1996, the mission started from launch pad 39-B of the Kennedy Space Center at an orbit height of 296 kilometers. In addition to smaller experiments in various scientific fields, the Italian TSS-1R tethered satellite was deployed, but to no avail, as the connection cable tore off after a distance of 19 kilometers and the satellite could no longer be captured. On March 9, 1996, Allen's third and final mission landed back on its launch site. The mission lasted 15 days, 17 hours and 41 minutes.
