Andries Schoemaker (born October 9, 1660 in Amsterdam , † December 23, 1735 ibid) was a Dutch textile merchant, collector and editor of historical and topographical information and images about cities, villages, churches, castles and other objects in the Netherlands and neighboring areas as well as numismatists .

Life

Having achieved prosperity through the textile trade, he devoted himself, especially after 1725, to researching and summarizing the history of his area of interest. He visited the places and evaluated related sources. On this basis, he published a description of the individual place with many historical and cultural features. Many places are also provided with drawings.

These were made by commissioned artists, if not by himself. For example Cornelis Pronk (1691–1759) and his pupil Abraham de Haen (1707–1748) on joint visits to the provinces. He also used prints and sources - some of which have been lost today - which he copied, colored and introduced into his collection.

This collection, called atlas , contained not only the city and landscape views, but also other images such as the coats of arms of families and communities, coins and others. A total of 9,000 pages with 2,600 color images were arranged according to provinces and domains. Schoemaker owned a selected collection of medals from which he published the most important pieces in his atlas.

After his death, the collection was dissolved and sold. Most of it was gradually integrated into public collections. Schoemaker was married to Rachel Kroll (* 1661 Amsterdam, † January 7, 1723) and had ten children, two of whom survived. His son was Gerrit Schoemaker (* September 5, 1692 Amsterdam † 1736). Like his father, he was a cloth merchant, writer and draftsman. He accompanied his father on his trips and accompanied the collections. In 1732 he also worked on the book '' Nord-Holländisches Arkadien '' by Claas Bruin . The eldest daughter Johanna Schoemaker (* 1683) married a Willem Dirksoon Blaauw (1668-1728) in 1701.
