The Andromeda net bug ( Stephanitis takeyai ) is a bug from the family of net bugs (Tingidae).

features

The bugs are 3.0 to 3.5 millimeters long. They are similar to Stephanitis rhododendri , but have predominantly pale colored hemielytres and a narrow brownish band near their base.

distribution and habitat

Originally widespread in Japan, it was introduced to North America and Europe in the second half of the 20th century. It was first discovered in Europe in 1994, in 1998 in the south of England and also in Poland. It now appears in almost all of Germany and, since 2011, also in Austria, where it was first recorded in Graz. In Great Britain, the species is common in the south-east and is believed to be more common.

Way of life

The animals live on Pieris japonica ("lavender heather"), with which they were also abducted through export from Japan. The bugs also suckle on rhododendrons ( rhododendrons ) and can cause great damage there. In North America, the bugs have also been found on other plants outside of the heather family (Ericaceae). The oviposition and overwintering takes place in the same way as with the species of the genus Stephanitis , which also live on rhododendrons. Under ideal conditions, several generations can be trained per year.
