Life

Andy Clyde was originally from Scotland, where he made his debut as the son of a theater manager on vaudeville stages and driving shows. At the beginning of the 1920s he went to the USA at the invitation of James Finlayson . There he was one of the numerous comedians who were under contract with Mack Sennett for the next decade . In the Mack Sennett Comedies he appeared in countless characterizations starting in 1921, with which he proved to be one of the most versatile actors in the studio. Occasionally he formed a duo with Sennett star Billy Bevan , including in the short film Wandering Willies .

In the sound film era, he specialized in the figure of a mischievous old owl with a mustache and glasses. After his departure from Sennett, he also played this role in a series of short comedies for Educational Pictures . With the same film character he continued his star short film career from 1934 for over 20 years for Columbia Pictures , which made him the longest-running comedy star of this studio after the Three Stooges . In the 1940s he was also the comical sidekick California Carlson in the film series about the gentleman-cowboy Hopalong Cassidy . He later worked in a similar position at the Poverty Row studio Monogram in Whip Wilson's series before he was part of the regular cast of television series such as The Real McCoys or Lassie in the 1950s . His oeuvre encompasses nearly 400 film and television roles.

Clyde was married to one of Mack Sennett's bathing beauties , Elsie Maud Tarran.
