Andrew "Andy" Griffin (born March 7, 1979 in Higher End ) is an English football player who plays primarily in defense . He has been under contract with third division Doncaster Rovers since 2012 .

Career as a player

Stoke City

Griffin began his professional career at Stoke City, where he made a name for himself as a solid full-back. His impressive way of working on "The Potter" (nickname for Stoke City) drew Newcastle United's attention. Finally, Griffin and Newcastle were able to agree on a move in January 1998. The transfer fee was 1.5 million pounds.

Newcastle United

At Newcastle Griffin developed steadily, so that he was appointed to the England U-21 national team. Under Sir Bobby Robson he played a sovereign season in 2002/03, including in the UEFA Champions League , where he scored the winning goal against Juventus Turin and was able to attract attention.

Portsmouth FC

However, his performances were offset by several injuries last season. When his contract expired at the end of the 2003/04 season, he did not extend it, but moved to Portsmouth FC after 97 competitive games for Newcastle United, free of charge . In the summer of 2006, Griffin was told he would not play a role in Harry Redknapp's plans. On January 19, 2007, he was loaned out to Stoke City. At the end of the 2006/07 season, he returned to Portsmouth. Stoke City coach Tony Pulis already hinted at the time that he wanted to bring Griffin back to Stoke City.

Derby County

After three years at Portsmouth , Andy Griffin signed a three-year contract with Derby County on July 31, 2007 .

Return to Stoke City

On January 11, 2008, Stoke City confirmed that Griffin would appear again for the club in the future. The transfer fee is said to have been around £ 300,000. Griffin was given a four year contract. At the Potters he received the jersey number 2. When on January 31, 2008 Stoke City's captain John Eustace moved to Watford FC , Griffin was named the new captain. Griffin described the appointment with the words "proud moment in my career" (in German: a proud moment in my career). Shortly after the turn of 2008/09, Griffin lost his regular place. He had previously fought an open dispute on December 28, 2008 with his teammate Ricardo Fuller , who had physically attacked Griffin in the game against West Ham United and had received the red card - Griffin later left the field injured and declared that he would later renounce Griffin Coach Tony Pulis later with his form weakness.
