Andrew Nesbitt "Andy" Nelson (born July 5, 1935 in Custom House , London ) is an English football player and coach . Nelson celebrated his greatest success as a player in 1962 with Ipswich Town , when he took first place in the First Division , the top English division at the time, and won the championship. After the end of his active career, Nelson began a career as a coach at Gillingham FC in 1971 and left the club in 1974 for Charlton Athletic . With Charlton he managed to place in the top ten in the second division in 1976 and 1977 . But in the following years Nelson came under increasing pressure, as the relegation could only be celebrated on the last match days. 1979 the pressure on him increased further, because Mike Bailey was hired as head coach, which he was only active as an assistant coach. In March 1980 the contract was dissolved after three defeats in a row. Charlton Athletic was already on a relegation zone at this point .
