Anestis S. Veletsos

Anestis Stavrou Veletsos (born April 28, 1927 in Istanbul - † October 25, 2018 ) was an American engineering scientist.

Veletsos attended Robert College in Istanbul and then studied civil engineering with a bachelor's degree in 1948 and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a master's degree in 1950 and a doctorate in 1953. At the time, he also worked as a civil engineer. In 1953 he was assistant professor and later professor at the University of Illinois and from 1966 at Rice University . He was an adjunct professor at the University of Houston .

He dealt with the dynamics of structures and foundations, the dynamics of offshore platforms and the dynamics of structures during earthquakes.

In 1977 he was visiting professor at Berkeley and at the Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2001 he received the Von Karman Medal , the Nathan M. Newmark Medal in 1978 and the Housner Medal in 1997. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and an honorary doctorate from the University of Patras .
