history

The establishment was opened in 1903 by the Austrian Anton Rumpelmayer (1832–1914), who was purveyor to the imperial court in Nice and Cannes . The house originally operated under the name Rumpelmayer . Anton Rumpelmayer's son René, later his widow Angelina, continued to run the coffee and confectionery shop. The name Angelina is said to be derived from Rumpelmayer's daughter-in-law, who took over the restaurant in 1916. The architect Edouard-Jean Niermans acted as the designer of the restaurant, which is kept in the style of the Belle Epoque. The coffee house was frequented by the nobility and the upper middle class. Customers included the writer Marcel Proust and the fashion designer Coco Chanel . The restaurant remained in the Rumpelmayer family until 1963. Since 2005 it has belonged to the Bertrand restaurant group, which has expanded the Angelina name into a trademark of an international patisserie chain in the Near and Far East.

The Angelina is known for its almost pudding-like hot chocolate ( chocolat l'africain ) and for its Mont Blanc cakes. The Angelina is being expanded by the operator Groupe Bertrand and now has another house in the Palais des Congrès at Place de la Porte Maillot 2. The name is also marketed internationally on sweets.
