Angler (cattle)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The angler , also known as the German Red Cattle , is a breed of domestic cattle . Anglers have a solid dark red to deep brown fur.

The angler breed originated in fishing , a cultural landscape between Schlei and Flensburg Fjord . In the early 20th century, bulls of the red Danish dairy cattle breed , later also Swedish red cattle and Red Holstein were crossed into the original angler breed . At the end of the 20th century, the modern type of the angler breed emerged.

Modern anglers are bred for a high milk yield and, because of the crossings, sometimes show a red and white color markings. In 2013, cows of the breed in Schleswig-Holstein achieved a milk yield of 8110 kg milk, 4.72% fat and 3.61% protein. Because of the high proportion of kappa casein and the overall high protein content, the anglers' milk is particularly suitable for cheese production.

In order to preserve the original genetic make-up of the angler cattle, the red cattle were defined in the old angler breeding direction and are now run as an independent breed. All individuals with a foreign gene content of less than 12.5 percent are considered old anglers.
