Anglican High School (formerly: Church of England High School ) is a single-educational high school for girls in St. George’s , Grenada . It is one of eighteen secondary schools on the Caribbean island . It was founded in 1916.

history

The Church of England High School was founded in 1916 by Archdeacon Walton as a private Anglican school. The first classrooms were at Bachelor Hall on Simmons Alley . At that time the school had three employees and nineteen students. In the first few years, the students paid for lessons. They entered at the level of the grammar school (~ high school) and did their full further education. The school later moved to Lamollie House on Church Street , where the CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank now stands. It was later relocated to the Grenada Boys' Secondary School building , where it was located between 1946 and 1952. With the move in 1946, the school changed its name to "Anglican High School" and became a school with pure "secondary education". In September 1952 the school relocated to the building on Tanteen Road . In 1957 the school was expanded to include a two-story concrete building.

In October 1972, during the unrest in connection with discussions with Great Britain about Grenada's independence, the school was destroyed by fire. Student protests called for investigations after 450 students were left without a place. Government employees were hired to prepare the buildings of an abandoned government school on Melville Street for temporary school operation. However, parents and teachers declined this offer. At the beginning of 1973 work began on building a new school building. This building was destroyed again in 2004 when Hurricane Ivan hit the island. The Anglican High School Past Pupil Association and the government of Grenada worked together this time to build the two-story building, and there have been several additions over the years. In 2015, for example, a library was built and the Food and Nutrition Laboratory (utility building) was enlarged .

Curriculum

Between 1916 and the 1950s, the curriculum included biology and general science , British history, geography, literature, math, religion and a variety of language courses - English, French, Latin and Spanish. In the 1960s Caribbean and European History were added and in the 1970s the curriculum was expanded to include chemistry, physics, family life education, cooking, music, sewing and sports. The school now offers 21 different subjects, including bookkeeping, business and office administration, information technology and technical drawing.

Extracurricular activities

The school prides itself on its sporting activities and has been the Girls' Division Champion of the Inter-Collegiate Games eighteen times .

The Girl Guides Association of Grenada was founded at the school in 1925 and is still one of a number of clubs and associations in which female students can participate.
