history

In the 1850s, asked Moshoeshoe I. , the head of the Basotho , the Anglican Bishop of Cape Town , missionaries to send. He did not do this, but Moshoeshoe sent two younger sons to the Anglican school in Zonnebloem in Cape Town. One of them, Jeremiah Libopuoa, was the first Mosotho to be sent to England to train as a priest because of his talent , but he died there in 1863. In the same year the bishop of the newly established Bloemfontein diocese held a service at Thaba Bosiu . In 1875 a first priest was hired for the Basotho. In 1876 mission stations were established in Mohale's Hoek and Hlotse . The missionaries were instructed to distance themselves from the British colonial administration and the barena . Nevertheless, they were persecuted against the colonial administration in the course of the Basotho Gun War , as they were believed to be pro-British. As a result, the number of mission stations and church members increased again. In 1894 an Anglican teachers' college was founded in Hlotse, which existed until 1907. In 1906, 1,000 Basotho students attended Anglican schools and eleven priests worked in eight stations. In 1909 the morena e moholo Griffith Lerotholi was baptized Anglican, but shortly afterwards he converted to Catholicism .

In 1913 a Mosotho was ordained an Anglican priest for the first time. In 1950 the Diocese of Basutoland became independent; With the independence of Lesotho in 1966, the diocese was renamed "Lesotho". Desmond Tutu was the Anglican Bishop of Lesotho from 1976 to 1978 .
