The hair of the angora goat is called mohair . This natural fiber is specifically the lightest textile fiber . The word mohair comes from the Arabic language , in which it describes a fabric made from hair. In addition to making wool , mohair is also used to make teddy bears and doll hair. It is also used on ski skins .
Extraction
Angora goats, also popularly called mohair goats, originally come from the Ankara province in Turkey . For the purpose of wool production, however, they are also mainly kept in Australia , Lesotho , Madagascar and South Africa . A goat is shorn twice a year and produces between 3 and 6 kg of wool.

The wool of the angora goat is long, silky, curly and very fine in young animals. Mohair is divided into the categories "Kid", "Young goat" and "Adult" depending on the age of the goat and thus the diameter of the goat hair (the younger the animal, the finer the hair). The Kid fineness class is mainly used for clothing. The Adult class, on the other hand, is used more often for blankets, pillows, upholstery and carpets.
Textiles made from mohair are characterized by their softness and comfort. The fine fibers make mohair water-repellent; at the same time, it absorbs moisture without feeling wet. The fabric has a cooling effect in summer and a warming one in winter. If processed well, mohair is characterized by its crease resistance.

Textiles made of mohair wool require special care when washing and run in the tumble dryer. Mohair should always be washed according to the product's instructions. If hand washing is recommended, the fabric can be washed in warm, not too hot water together with wool detergent. It is particularly important not to let the fabric soak for too long. If the product is designated for a washing machine cycle, a wool cycle at 30 ° C with a low speed should be used.
Trivia
In Poland , the expression “mohair berets” ( moherowe berety ) became a derogatory synonym for loyal supporters of national Catholic parties and related media such as Radio Maryja in the 2000s . On November 10, 2005, the then opposition leader Donald Tusk described the cooperation between PiS , LPR and Samoobrona in the Sejm as a “mohair coalition” ( moherowa koalicja ).
