Animal Equality (Spanish: Igualdad Animal ) is a non-profit animal rights organization that works to change the relationship between humans and animals.

Organization and goal

The organization was founded in 2006 under the name Igualdad Animal (Spanish for "Animal Equality") in Madrid. In 2012, the previously independent organization Equanimal was merged into the association. Today Animal Equality is active in seven other countries besides Spain: Great Britain, India, Italy, Germany (since 2012), Mexico, Venezuela and the USA. Animal Equality Germany eV is a non-profit association founded in Stuttgart with offices in Stuttgart (headquarters) and Berlin, which is financed through membership fees, donations and charity events.

The group is committed to animal rights and the abolition of all forms of animal use. Animal Equality promotes a vegan diet .

In 2014 and 2015, Animal Equality was named one of the top three most efficient animal rights organizations in the world by the independent evaluation organization Animal Charity Evaluators based on its analysis of cost efficiency, track record and financial resources.

activities

Through various activities, such as undercover research and campaigns, high-profile campaigns and nutrition campaigns, the association calls for the way society is treated with animals to be questioned. In Germany, volunteers from the organization also carried out an "open exemption" of six laying hens in 2013.

research

One focus of the association's work is the public processing of research in animal facilities. Typically, images from plants are created without the operator's consent. Agricultural advocacy groups often see property or personal rights, and in particular their privacy, violated to a justiciable extent in this type of research.

Animal Equality sees this research as a contribution to the public debate and considers a realistic representation of the conditions in animal facilities as a basis for its argumentation for a fundamental departure from animal production . In Germany there are no convictions for activities in connection with animal equality.

The research by Animal Equality, which has so far found the most widespread distribution in Germany via national and international media, dealt with the topics of pork (2014), duck fattening (2014), organic eggs (2015) and the dog and cat meat trade in China (2013 ), which resulted in the closure of a dog slaughterhouse and 33 dog and cat sales outlets, which resulted in more than 1.5 million dogs and cats avoiding slaughter.

Demonstrations

Carcass action

Other forms of animal equality action are symbolic: the association often organizes demonstrations and information events on animal rights and veganism, including lectures and workshops as well as petitions as part of campaigns.

In 2013 animals were stolen as part of an “open liberation” and then brought to “ Lebenshöfe ”. The activists revealed their identity here and showed their faces in front of the camera. They accepted legal consequences because they see their action in the context of civil disobedience as legitimate. Again, there have been no convictions so far.

Animal Equality was a newer form of action in the spectrum of animal rights and characterized so-called “animal body actions”, in which sympathizers of the organization hold the bodies of dead animals that have perished in animal production in front of them in a public place and mourn.
