Anita Shapira (born March 25, 1940 in Warsaw ) is an Israeli historian.

Life

Anita Shapira was born in German-occupied Warsaw to Jewish parents. She survived the Holocaust . She emigrated to Palestine in 1947 and grew up in the Tel Aviv district of Yad Eliyahu .

Shapira studied history at Tel Aviv University and received her doctorate in 1974 under Daniel Carpi with a topic on the history of the Jewish labor movement. In addition to studies on the history of Zionism, she subsequently presented biographically oriented studies on the work of Berl Katznelson , S. Yizhar , Jigal Allon , David Ben-Gurion and Josef Chaim Brenner . In 1985 she was appointed professor at the university and from 2000 was director of the "Weizmann Institute for the Study of Zionism". She founded the “ Yitzhak Rabin Center for Israel Studies” and was its first director from 1996 to 1999. From 1990 to 1995 she was dean of the Philosophical Faculty and was a member of the planning committee of the Israel Education Council during this time.

Shapira is Vice President of the Israeli Historical Society and co-editor of the Jewish Review of Books. In 2008 she received the Israel Prize for History. After her retirement, she became a Senior Fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute in Tel Aviv.

Shapira is married and has three children.
