Anjuta ( Russian Анюта ) is a short story by the Russian writer Anton Chekhov , which was published on February 22, 1886 in issue 8 of the St. Petersburg joke sheet Oskolki .

The pale 25-year-old Anjuta has been living in shabby pensions with one student after the other for almost seven years. Stepan Klotschkow, a third-year medical student, is the sixth. The five before Klotschkow have already become one like the other made men after graduating.

In the middle of the Russian winter: Klotschkov's twelve rubles , which he receives from his father every month, have already been used up again. We need money for tobacco and tea. As soon as the embroidery is finished, 25 kopecks are in prospect. Anyuta embroider and embroider. The busy bee forgets to clean up the insufficiently heated furnished room. Klotschkov keeps Anjuta from work; uses the skinny young woman who has to free her upper body as a living anatomical study object for his buffalo. The skeleton of the human rib cage will be the subject of the next exam. Anjuta's time to complete the urgent manual work is running out. In addition, the undressed woman freezes. The artist Fetissow, a good acquaintance of Klotschow, comes and stretches the friend of the doctor who is buffeting. Anyuta has to be a model in the artist's studio as a psyche , because otherwise Fetissov cannot imagine a psyche.

Klotschkow, left alone, is ashamed because the esthete Fetissov has accused him of a sloppy way of life. Disgusted, the budding medic turns his gaze away from his messy dwelling and looks to the future: Married to a decent woman, he lives a decent life. It follows that Anjuta - who cannot even keep the room in order - should be thrown out straight away. When the returned Anjuta has to go and cries while packing her utensils, Klotschkow has a heart. The girl is allowed to stay. But what Anjuta, who calms down, doesn't know: In a week at the latest, Klotschkow will show her at the door.

  • Anyuta is neither Klotschow's lover, nor does she live at his expense. The future physician uses the girl rather as an object or a thing: Klotschkow studies anatomy with Anjuta's body. Anyuta doesn't want to change her life.
