The old sailmaker Heinrich Carstens works as a sailing instructor in a yacht club. He teaches the six teenagers Gudrun, Monika, Werner, Jörg, Peter and Kirsten to sail on vacation. During the course of the lesson, the female aspirants in particular learn that a sailing trip can be not only wildly romantic, but also quite wet and uncomfortable. The sailing ship Pummel used for training gets caught in a storm or runs aground. The youngsters in the yacht club hear what else can happen on board a ship when their teacher Carstens and his friends Karl Tiedemann and Erwin Wernecke, all experienced sea dogs, spin their sailor's yarn.
