Ankylography

Ankylography (Greek: ankylos - curved, graphein - write) is a lensless imaging process .

Procedure

So far, it is the only way to generate data with just one measurement from which the spatial structure of the depicted object can be reconstructed. Scientists from the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), the Molecular Biology Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles , the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of North Texas describe the process in the science magazine Nature .

The object is illuminated by a laser that emits soft X- rays. The X-rays are diffracted . The diffraction pattern is recorded photographically. If the two-dimensional diffraction pattern has sufficient resolution, the three-dimensional structure of the object can be calculated from it. Ankylography is still in the experimental stage.
