Ann Catley (* 1745 in Tower Hill , † October 14, 1789 in London ) was a British singer , actress and dancer .

Life

Ann Catley was born in Tower Hill in 1745, the daughter of a hired coach and a laundress. She later took the name of her partner, Dragoon General Francis Lascelle. Documents or evidence of the alleged marriage to Lascelle, which was alleged to have taken place around 1780, were never found. Due to the fact that the estate did not go to the husband but to the children directly, a marriage can be excluded under British law.

Ann Catley was already noticed in 1755 for her musical and dancing talent. From 1760 she was trained in singing and dance by William Bates, a professional musician who can be identified in West End London. Ann Catley first appeared in Covent Garden in London in 1763 . Her real career began in the same year at the Smock Alley Theater in Dublin, where she quickly became the hottest singer and actress: Her clothes and hairstyle, known as "Catleyfied", were copied by society. Ann Catley performed mainly in Covent Garden between 1770 and 1784. The withdrawal from the stage was due to a progressive tuberculosis disease, of which Ann Catley died on October 14, 1789.

Ann Catley was notorious for her disordered private life and numerous relationships with mostly higher social figures. The partner Francis Lascelle recognized the ten children born in the course of the relationship.
