Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta

Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta ( June 22, 1956 in Bathurst ) is a Gambian politician. From 1999 to 2004 she was Minister of Education , and from 2004 she works for UNESCO .

Life

Ann-Therese Ndong-Jatta attended St. Joseph's High School in Bathurst (now Banjul) and studied history and education at Bayero University in Kano (Nigeria), graduating in 1981. In 1983 she received a scholarship from the American Alpine Institute to complete a master's degree in educational leadership at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon her return in 1985, she was named the first female headmistress at St. Peter's High School, which she joined with the Commonwealth Secretariat- sponsored position of Headmaster Education Program Coordinator. She completed two post-graduate programs in Policy Analysis and Leaders in Development at Harvard University . In 1995 she was appointed Director of Planning and then became the first senior education officer and director for secondary and tertiary education.

From January 1999 to 2004 she was Minister of Education in the Yahya Jammeh cabinet , replacing Satang Jow . After her tenure as minister, she joined UNESCO in 2004 as director of basic education. In 2008 she became director of the Office for Education in Africa.

On October 1, 2016, she was appointed Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in East Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. The region includes the countries Kenya, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia and Uganda.

In 2005 she published poems in the anthology The Repeal and other poems , which Hassoum Ceesay described as the most important Gambian feminist publication since Augusta Jawara's Rebellion (1968).
