Anna (coin face)

Anna ( Hindi : आना, ānā) is the name of an earlier Indian coin . It was minted in copper - nickel from 1906 under British rule and was equivalent to 1/16 rupee . Copper pieces of 1/12, ¼ and ½ Anna (each from 1835) and silver 2 Anna coins (from 1841) already existed in the 19th century . From 1919 to 1921 4 and 8 Anna coins were also minted in copper-nickel. On April 1, 1957, India introduced a decimal currency system (1 rupee = 100 paises ) and thus abolished Anna as the nominal coin .
The Pakistani rupee was also divided into anna until 1961. The Sri Lankan rupee, which emerged from the Indian rupee, was only based on this division for a short transition period and was decimalized as early as 1869.
