Anna Jean Ayres

Anna Jean Ayres (* 1920 ; † 1989 ) was an American developmental psychologist.

After training and working as an occupational therapist , she studied psychology and completed her habilitation at the Institute for Brain Research at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) .

As a therapist, she has dealt with neurological abnormalities and developed the theory of sensory integration . This approach tries to explain different motor disorders resulting from incorrect processing of sensory information in the brain . To treat these disorders, she began by learning the basic processing mechanisms.

In 1976 she and others founded the Ayres Clinic in Torrance , USA, where children are treated and therapists are trained.
