Lady Anna Maria Stanhope (born September 3, 1783 , † July 3, 1857 in London ) was a British noblewoman and lady-in-waiting ( Lady of the Bedchamber ) to Queen Victoria . By marriage she led from 1808 to 1839 the courtesy title Marchioness of Tavistock and from 1839 the courtesy title Duchess of Bedford . In the literature it is often the introduction of the British afternoon tea Afternoon and Five-O-Clock Tea attributed.

She was a daughter of Charles Stanhope , 3rd Earl of Harrington . In 1808 she married Francis Russell, Marquess of Tavistock , the eldest son of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford , who inherited this in 1839 as 7th Duke of Bedford . Through her marriage, she was also sister-in-law to Prime Minister John Russell, 1st Earl Russell .

From their marriage they had a son, William Russell, 8th Earl of Bedford (1809–1872).
