Order of the Eagle of Este
The Order of the Eagle of Este was founded on December 27, 1855 by Duke Franz V of Modena as a civil and military merit order in three classes. With the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 the order expired.

The medal is an eight-pointed, white-enameled, gold-rimmed Maltese cross , the tips of which are studded with small golden balls. There are decorations between the cross angles. In the blue medallion of the cross, surrounded by a white enameled ring with the inscription PROXIMA SOLI MDCCCLV. , the crowned white eagle of Este-Modena. On the reverse of the medallion the image of the patron saint of Modena. All around in gold letters S. CONTARDUS ATESTINUS .
For civil merit, a green oak wreath is attached between the cross and the support ring, and trophies for military merit .
The ribbon is white with two blue stripes.
The grand cross was carried with a sash over the right shoulder to the left hip and with an eight-pointed breast star . Commanders wore a neck medal, knights the medal on a ribbon.
