Anna Tonelli , née Anna Nistri (* around 1763 in Florence , † 1846 ) was an Italian portrait painter.

Life

Anna Tonelli married the violinist and composer Luigi Tonelli before 1785 . The marriage had two children.

Anna Tonelli was probably trained in Florence by Giuseppe Piattoli . Among other things, she portrayed the collector Henry Blundell , who was in Rome in 1790 . Possibly she came in contact with Hugh Douglas Hamilton through Lord Clive ; both painted members of the Clive family. From 1794 she lived in London , where she taught the Clive children in drawing and exhibited twice at the Royal Academy. From 1798 to 1801 she accompanied Lady Henrietta Clive and her daughters on a trip to India. In India she mainly painted with watercolors. After returning to London, she traveled on to live with her own family in Florence. In 1806 Filippo Mazzei hired her to train his daughter Elisabetta. Mazzei described the family in a letter to Thomas Jefferson and praised Anna Tonelli as a kind of universal genius. Presumably this letter was written in preparation for the family to emigrate to America; Jefferson, however, seems to have pointed out the high cost of living in a big city and thereby scared off the tonellis. In 1807 the family was with Mazzei in Pisa , later they apparently lived again in Florence.
