Rima (crater)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rima is an impact crater on Ariel , the fourth largest moon on the planet Uranus . Rima has a diameter of 41 km and is located on Ariel between 18.1 and 18.6 degrees south and 258.7 and 263 degrees east, north of the Kachina Chasmata canyon system . Nearby are the Oonagh (west-southwest) and Abans (northwest) craters .

designation

The crater was named after the protagonist from WH Hudson's novel Green Mansions: A Romance of the Tropical Forest from 1904 (published in German as Rima and Das Vogelmädchen ). Since the moon Ariel was named after the air spirit from William Shakespeare's The Storm , surface features on Ariel are also named after air spirits by the International Astronomical Union .

When the Voyager 2 space probe flew by in January 1986, 35 percent of the Ariel surface could be photographed with a resolution that allows astrogeological analysis. This also included the Rima crater. It was named in 1988.
