Hugh Douglas Hamilton (* around 1740 ; † 1808 ) was an Irish portrait painter .

Life

Hugh Douglas Hamilton's origin is not known for sure. He may have been the son of a wig maker in Dublin . From 1754 he learned from James Mannin, who taught in Robert West's drawing school in Dublin. In 1755, Hamilton won first prize in a competition there. In 1764 he moved to London , where he earned his living mainly with pastel portraits. He participated in numerous exhibitions of the Free Society and the Society of Artists. His portrait drawings were apparently imitated by artists such as Alexander Pope and Anna Tonelli , who might also be among his students, so that some works were later difficult to assign. Before 1769, Hugh Douglas Hamilton married a woman named Mary. The marriage resulted in a daughter named Harriot, who accompanied the parents on trips through Italy, which took place from around 1779. In Rome it was the latest in 1782 attention to the painter apparently, from 1783 to 1786 he lived in Florence on. In 1784 he became a member of the Accademia di Disegno. From 1786 to 1791 he lived in Rome, where he made a trip to southern Italy in 1788, possibly accompanied by the Flaxman family . During his time in Italy, Hugh Douglas Hamilton built a large art collection and painted numerous portraits. In 1792 he returned to Ireland and settled at 20 Frederick Street in Dublin. Instead of the pastel technique, he now mostly used that of oil painting. Until 1804 he worked as a portrait painter; then his interest turned to the chemical background of color pigments. Some of his unfinished work was completed by his daughter. After his death on May 15, 1811, an auction of the painter 's works took place at Christie's . Several of the portraits that Hugh Douglas Hamilton painted were circulated as engravings.
