Portrait of Anna Zanders

Anna Eleonore Sophie Zanders , b. Siemens (born December 19, 1858 in Berlin ; † July 27, 1939 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a cultural benefactor and the wife of Richard Zanders .

Life

Her birth name was Anna Siemens, she was a daughter of the inventor and entrepreneur Werner von Siemens , who was ennobled in 1888 . Her family belonged to the so-called new nobility . On May 28, 1887, she married the paper manufacturer Richard Zanders and brought a handsome dowry into the marriage. From this, the Zanders couple bought the property at Lerbach Castle and had Ludwig Bopp built a mansion in the English country house style there until 1898, based on plans by Gabriel von Seidl . Her marriage to Richard Zanders was childless.

Her younger sister Käthe Pietschker (1861–1949) also worked as a founder.

Merits

Together with her husband, she began building the Gronauerwald garden settlement in 1897 . In 1901 she and her husband also donated the Hildebrandt Fountain , which originally stood on the market square and is now located between the Villa Zanders and the Paas Inn. After Richard Zanders' death in 1906, she made sure that a water network was installed in the Gronauerwald garden settlement. When it became clear that the building and usage restrictions imposed on the buyers offered no security against speculative resale of the houses, Anna Zanders arranged for the company to be converted into the Gemeinnützige Gartensiedlungsgesellschaft Gronauer Wald mbH in 1913 according to the principles of the German Garden City Society . This reorganization was intended to prevent a gradual increase in the price of land and buildings. At the 50th anniversary of the city in 1906, she gave the city of Bergisch Gladbach the marble fountain in the hallway of the town hall as well as the windows of the conference room and the furnishings of the mayor's room. Together with her brother-in-law, Hans Zanders, she gave the city the bathing establishment (indoor swimming pool) built at their expense and opened on August 3, 1914.

Honor

The city of Bergisch Gladbach has dedicated Anna-Zanders-Straße in the garden settlement of Gronauerwald to her.
