Justus Liebig's Annalen der Chemie , mostly just called Liebigs Annalen (abbreviation in older quotations: Ann. Or Liebigs Ann. , Since 1979 in quotations: Liebigs Ann. Chem. ), Was one of the most important journals in the field of chemistry worldwide .

history

The renowned natural scientists Justus von Liebig , Philipp Lorenz Geiger and Rudolph Brandes founded the journal Annalen der Pharmacie in 1832 for a lively exchange of current knowledge . The pharmacist Geiger had already had relevant publishing experience with his " magazine for pharmacy and the relevant sciences " since 1824 . The first magazine therefore contained inserts

  • Magazine for Pharmacy and Experimental Criticism (1832 to 1850, Edit. PL Geiger )
  • Archives of the Pharmacists' Association in Northern Germany (1832 to 1834, Edit. R. Brandes )

After a short time, the insignificant club archive of Brandes was replaced by

  • New Journal of Pharmacy for Doctors, Pharmacists and Chemists (1834 to 1850, Edit. JB Trommsdorff )

Volume 11 of 1834 contained all three supplements once, Brandes then left the editorial office, and the pharmacist Trommsdorff took over the editorial support of the new supplement. In 1836 the pharmacist Geiger died unexpectedly at a young age, until 1838 Liebig was able to replace him in the editorial office by his friend Emanuel Merck . In 1837 the pharmacist Trommsdorff also died.

In 1838 Liebig was able to fill his editorial team for several years with two foreign chemists Dumas and Graham as well as the chemist Friedrich Wöhler, who was a close friend . From 1840 the journal was called Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie .

Ten years later, the pharmaceutical supplements were outsourced and an additional numbering ("New Series") was introduced for the magazine, but this did not find any acceptance until number 95. In 1868 " Messrs. Liebig and Wöhler " were among the honorary members of this society at the presentation of the competing reports of the German Chemical Society.

After Liebig's death in 1873, in his honor, “his” journal was renamed “Justus Liebig's Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie” , a year later reduced to “Justus Liebig's Annalen der Chemie” . For over a century, this name stood for extraordinarily high quality German-language publications, especially in organic chemistry.

In 1997 the journal was first merged with the Dutch Recueil des Travaux Chimiques des Pays-Bas (first publication: 1882) to form Liebigs Annalen / Recueil and in 1998 with other European national journals of organic chemistry to form the European Journal of Organic Chemistry .
