Anne Childes Seguin
Anne Childes Seguin (* 1809 in London ; † 1888 ) was an American opera singer (soprano).
Life
Childes studied at the Royal Academy of Music , where she met her future husband Edward Seguin . She made her debut in 1836 at the Theater Royal Drury Lane in the opera Fidelio , she was also a member of the ensemble of the Italian Opera. In 1839 she made her debut at the National Theater in New York, representing Jane Shirreff in the role of Rosina in Henry Bishop's opera Barber of Seville . She remained a member of the Opera House ensemble until 1840, but also undertook two major concert tours with her husband, with whom she later directed the Seguin Operatic Troupe . Her most famous role was the Arline in Michael William Balfe's opera The Bohemian Girl . After the early death of her husband in 1852, she lived as a singing teacher in New York. She is considered the first European opera singer who managed to establish herself permanently in the USA.
