Anne-Stine Ingstad b. Moe (born February 11, 1918 in Lillehammer , † November 6, 1997 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian archaeologist who, together with her husband Helge Ingstad, became known as the discoverer of the Viking settlements in L'Anse aux Meadows , Canada .

Life

Anne-Stine Ingstadt was born in Lillehammer and married Helge Ingstad in 1941. A daughter, Benedicte, emerged from this connection. In the 1950s Anne-Stine studied Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Oslo . During the excavations from 1961 to 1968 in L'Anse aux Meadows she was active as director and found international recognition for her work. Her excavation team consisted of Norwegians, Swedes, Icelanders, Canadians and Americans.

After completing the work, Anne-Stine Ingstad turned to textile finds from the Viking Age , especially from the Oseberg ship .

Together with her husband, she has received honorary doctorates for her work from several universities , including Memorial University in Newfoundland and the University of Bergen . She was also a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and the Order of Saint Olav .
