The Ansel Adams Wilderness is a protected area of the type of a Wilderness Area in the US state of California . The area lies on the ridge of the Sierra Nevada and covers an area of around 935 km². Today it bears the name of Ansel Adams (1902–1984), an American nature photographer, whose pictures of the Sierra contributed significantly to their popularity and, as a result, their protection.

In the north the Wilderness borders on the Yosemite National Park , in the southeast on the John Muir Wilderness . The area belongs to the west of the ridge to the Sierra National Forest , east of the Inyo National Forest , two national forest areas , and is being jointly by the National Park Service and the US Forest Service managed. In the wild is the small Devils Postpile National Monument .

description

The reserve was established in 1964 as Minarets Wilderness to permanently secure an undeveloped part of the main Sierra ridge. In 1984 it was expanded by a good 35 km² and at that time it was given its current name shortly after Ansel Adams' death. As a Wilderness Area there is no tourist or other infrastructure, there are no roads, but 550 km of trails are maintained, including parts of the long-distance hiking trails John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail .

Permitted uses are trekking and trail riding . Because of its proximity to Yosemite National Park and large population centers, the Ansel Adams Wilderness is one of the few wilderness areas in which special measures are required to protect nature and its experience from too many visitors. Quotas are set for visitors who want to stay in the wilderness overnight and registration is required months in advance for most of the year. Tents and storage is only permitted in designated areas, ground fires are completely prohibited.

The highest point in the area is Mount Ritter at 4005 m. Other prominent peaks are The Minarets (3735 m) and Banner Peak (3880 m). The San Joaquin River , one of the two main rivers of California's long valley , has its source in the reserve .
