Until 1962 it was used as a retirement home for the Tamsweg community.

In 1742 a large part of the Tamsweg market burned down, and with it the Barbaraspital. Soon afterwards the reconstruction of the chapel began; this was inaugurated in 1759 by Archbishop Sigismund Graf Schrattenbach . However, the reconstruction of the hospital had exhausted the hospital's own capital and many properties had to be sold, so that the citizen's hospital was close to being closed at the end of the 18th century. In 1803 the last two residents were given food by a landlord. The hospital then served as barracks until 1806, but from 1818 again as a "supply house for poor and needy people from the citizenship of the market".
