António Óscar de Fragoso Carmona [ ɐ̃ˈtɔniw ˈɔʃkaɾ dɨ fɾɐˈɣozu kaɾˈmonɐ ] (born November 24, 1869 in Lisbon ; † April 18, 1951 ibid) was President of Portugal from 1926 to 1951, de facto only until 1932 .

Carmona was educated at the Royal Portuguese Military Academy, which he graduated in 1888. By 1922 he was promoted to general .

In 1926 Carmona took part in the coup d'état led by General Manuel de Oliveira Gomes da Costa , which overthrew the Republican government. Carmona then became Portuguese Foreign Minister from June 3 to July 6, 1926 .

On July 9, 1926, he was appointed Prime Minister and President of Portugal and was given dictatorial powers; in 1928 he was elected president for life by referendum. In 1932 he handed over the business of government to António de Oliveira Salazar , who had been his finance minister until then.
