António Rocha Peixoto

António Augusto César Octaviano da Rocha Peixoto (born May 18, 1866 in Póvoa de Varzim , † May 2, 1909 in Matosinhos ) was a Portuguese archaeologist and ethnographer .

Career

In 1891 he became secretary of the Revista de Portugal magazine, founded by his compatriot Eça de Queirós , and later wrote for other periodicals.

At the Academia Politécnica do Porto (today: University of Porto) he set up a mineralogical, geological and paleontological cabinet. In Porto he was also director of the public library and the Museu Municipal do Porto . Not far from his hometown, he led the excavations in Cividade de Terroso .

After his death, Rocha Peixoto was first buried in the Cemitério de Agramonte city ​​cemetery in Porto. Two weeks later the body was reburied in Póvoa de Varzim.

Honors

In 1966 the Biblioteca Municipal in Póvoa de Varzim was named after him.
