Anthocoris nemoralis is a bug fromthe flower bug family (Anthocoridae).

features

The bugs are 3.3 to 4.1 millimeters long. The species of the genus Anthocoris are sometimes very difficult to determine. The hemielytres of Anthocoris nemoralis are shiny only on the cuneus, the outer part of the embolium along the outer edge and on the apex of the corium. The first antenna segment is dark, the second is partially pale at the base. Compared to Anthocoris nemorum, the hemielytres are relatively dark and also have a slightly different pattern. The differentiation from Anthocoris confusus is very difficult. This similar species usually has slightly darker colored legs ( femora ).

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe, with the exception of the north, and is also found around the Mediterranean. In the east the distribution extends to the Caucasus. It was introduced into North America by humans. It is widespread and common in Central Europe. It rises in the Alps to around 1300 meters above sea level. In Great Britain the species is widespread and common, but less common than Anthocoris nemorum on low vegetation . In contrast to Anthocoris nemorum , drier and warmer, open habitats are settled.

Way of life

The animals live on different types of deciduous trees and dwarf shrubs, only rarely in the herb layer. They feed predatory on aphids and leaf fleas and their larvae, fringed winged birds and spider mites . They are not picky about their host plants, but they are often found in large numbers on hawthorns ( Crataegus ) or ash trees ( Fraxinus ). Due to their predatory way of life, they are considered beneficial insects in agriculture, for example in fruit growing. The overwintering takes place as an imago under bark scales, whereby the males, unlike the females, usually do not survive the winter. Like other species of its genus, it is found in spring on willows suckling the pollen of pussy willows . The eggs are laid individually in leaf tissue. The nymphs appear from May and June and are adult until July. In England and southern Russia, a second generation occurs in August and September each year. Apparently only one generation is developing in Central Europe.
