Anthony Ashley Cooper, 2nd Earl of Shaftesbury ( January 6, 1652 - November 10, 1699 ) was an English peer and politician .

He was the second-born son of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury and the Lady Frances Cecil († 1654), daughter of David Cecil, 3rd Earl of Exeter . Since his older brother Cecil had died young in 1651, he apparently married his father from 1672 to 1683 under the courtesy title of Lord Ashley .

From 1679 to 1699 he was Vice-Admiral of Dorset . He was thus responsible for the naval administration in this county and was subordinate to the Lord High Admiral .

From 1680 to 1683 he was a member of the House of Commons for the Borough Melcombe Regis . He belonged to the Whigs party . When his father died in 1683, he inherited his title as 2nd Earl of Shaftesbury . This gave him a seat in the House of Lords and left the House of Commons.

On September 22, 1669 he had married Lady Dorothy Manners, daughter of John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland . He had three children with her:

When he died in 1699, he was succeeded by his older son Anthony, who became famous as a philosopher and writer.
