Anthony Derek Gardner (born September 19, 1980 in Stafford ) is a former English football player .

society

Gardner began his career at Port Vale , where he played since youth and made his debut in the 1998/99 season. In January 2000, the defender moved to Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer fee of one million pounds . Gardner made his Premier League debut in March 2001 as a substitute for Derby County . His first goal for Tottenham was the decisive one in their 3-2 win over West Ham United in March 2002.

At the end of the 2000/01 season Gardner suffered a serious knee injury, so that he only completed 40 games for his club in his first three years in London. Gardner made his breakthrough in the 2003/04 season, when he became a regular and made his debut for the national team. During the 2005/06 season he injured his knee again and therefore only played 18 and 16 games in the following two years.

On January 31, 2008 Gardner went to the end of the current season 2007/08 on loan to Everton. For the "Blues", however, he did not play a single game during this time. Before the start of the 2008-09 season, Hull City became Gardner's next rental station. The clubs initially agreed on a loan period limited to January 2009, with Hull City being guaranteed a purchase option at any time within this period. The club pulled this purchase option in August 2008 and committed Gardner for £ 2.5 million. The Englishman signed a contract until 2011.

On August 19, 2011, he moved to Crystal Palace and signed a one-year contract. The last stop of his career was the second division team Sheffield Wednesday, for whom he played 42 league games from August 2012 to August 2013, before he was out for the remainder of the 2013/14 season due to an operation on the Achilles tendon and did not receive a contract extension at the end of the season.

National team

Gardner made his debut for the English team on March 31, 2004 when he came on as a substitute for John Terry in the 1-0 defeat in Sweden at half-time . Due to his injury problems he was denied further missions. In 2005 he had to cancel a trip to the USA for the national team due to knee problems.
