Tony Bell

Anthony Raymond "Tony" Bell is a British astro and plasma physicist. He is a professor at Oxford University .

Life

Bell received his PhD in radio astronomy from Cambridge University in 1977 (subject: Young supernova remnants ). He then worked as a physicist at GEC-Marconi, among other things on signal processing for radar and laser-plasma interaction. In 1985 he became a Lecturer at Imperial College London and in 2007 he became Professor at Oxford University (Clarendon Laboratory) and is also at the Central Laser Facility of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory . He is a Fellow at Somerville College .

He had a leading role in the development of the standard model about the origin of cosmic rays and the acceleration mechanisms of cosmic rays through shock waves ( English diffusive shock acceleration ) through magnetic mirror effects. In 2004 he also showed how magnetic fields can be strengthened, which was used to explain ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.

He made significant contributions to the theory of electron transport in laser-induced plasmas such as inertial fusion. He initiated the non-local theory of electron transport in laser-plasma interaction and showed how self-induced magnetic fields can focus high-energy electron beams into the fusion fuel. With John G. Kirk he showed the possibility of electron-positron pair generation in intensive laser-plasma interactions, i.e. quantum electrodynamic effects.

Awards and memberships

In 2014 he received the Fred Hoyle Medal and Prize , in 2016 the Eddington Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society and in 2018 the Hannes Alfvén Prize . In 2017 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society .
