The term anthracene derivatives summarizes substances (chemicals) that are formally derived from anthracene . These include substances that play a role as secondary plant substances. Examples of members of this group of substances:

  • Anthranoids
  • Anthraquinones
  • Anthracene glycosides are glycosides that have an anthracene derivative as an aglycon component that has an OH group in the 1- and 8-positions. The aglycon can be in the form of anthrone or anthraquinone .

Occurrence

Anthracene derivatives come z. B. in aloe (Aloe ferox), senna ( Senna alexandrina / Cassia angustifolia ), buckthorn bark ( Rhamnus frangula ) or medicinal rhubarb ( Rheum palmatum ).

Biological effects

The anthracene derivatives are responsible for the laxative effects of some herbal medicines. For some time there has been a discussion about whether anthracene derivatives can have a carcinogenic effect.
