‣ Topic  overview

A tragus piercing is a piercing through the small and thicker part of cartilage called the tragus at the entrance of the auditory canal in the auricle .
Today it is mainly worn for a fashionable point of view, where it established itself as a rarer variant of the ear hole , especially during the 1990s, alongside rook , snug , daith and conch piercing . In contrast to the lobe piercing through the earlobe or the helix piercing through the edge of the ear, it only appears in pop culture and has no historical-cultural references.

Variations

Tragus Piercing with a Ball Closure Ring

The classic tragus piercing is usually worn with a ball closure ring or a labret plug . However, the piercing can also be pierced vertically through the tragus. This variant is a surface piercing, which can usually lead to increased complications. A curved barbell or a surface bar are suitable for use.
The vertical tragus piercing was made famous by the piercer Luis Garcia.
A piercing through the cartilage process opposite the tragus is called an anti-tragus piercing .

Sting

A straight or curved IV cannula can be used, depending on the piercer's preference . A piece of cork should be held behind the tragus to prevent injuries to the ear canal. There is also the possibility of better healing dermal punches , but only a few piercing studios do it.

The tragus piercing is pierced with a normal piercing needle. The cartilage tissue at this point is thinner than with conch piercing , but is more stressed due to the very small and narrow place when piercing and especially when using the piercing jewelry . It should be noted that using a ring as an initial piece of jewelry is more painful than using a plug. When using a connector for the first time, an extra-long model is usually chosen, as swelling of the tissue is to be expected.

The widening of the branch canal is possible, but very unusual. There is little bleeding during and after the sting because the area is surrounded by relatively little connective tissue.

Healing and care

The healing process of a tragus piercing can take anywhere from two months to over a year to heal completely. Piercers often recommend the use of a local antibiotic in order to counteract the wild growth that often occurs with cartilage piercings . Aggressive disinfectants such as alcohol are generally not recommended.

Risks

Infections of the ear cartilage ( perichondritis ) occur more frequently in the area of the tragus than with a piercing of the earlobe. The claim that piercing the tragus could damage the facial nerve with irreversible facial paralysis lacks any anatomical basis.
