Legend, adoration

Today's island of Sant'Antioco just off the southwest coast of Sardinia and the main town of this island are named after the saint. Originally this island was called Sulci or Plumbaria after the lead deposits there. According to legend, Antiochus was a doctor who converted numerous people to Christianity in Cappadocia and Galatia under the reign of Emperor Hadrian and was then sentenced to forced labor in the mines on Sulci Island. There, however, he converted his overseer Cyriacus and secretly built an underground chapel before he was sentenced to death and executed on the island. Another tradition, however, relocates the martyrdom to Elaiussa Sebaste , where he is said to have been executed together with Cyriacus.

Antiochus is venerated as a saint, his feast day is December 13th . In the USA in particular , after this saint, the antioch-orthodox and antioch-greek-orthodox beliefs developed .
