Antiphilos (general)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antiphilos ( Greek  Ἀντίφιλος ; 4th century BC) was a general of Athens during the Lamian War (323–322 BC) against Macedonia .

Antiphilus was born after the death of Leosthenes during the siege of Lamia in the autumn of 323 BC. Appointed the new commander of the Attic hoplites ( strategos ) and thus commander in chief of the united Hellenic army for the fight against Macedonia. He lifted the siege of Lamia on the news of the advancement of a relief army under the command of the Macedonian general Leonnatos and subsequently won a victory over Leonnatos in southern Thessalia. In the Battle of Krannon (August 322 BC), however, he was defeated by Antipater . With the previous defeat of the Attic fleet in the sea battle of Amorgos , the defeat of the Allied Greeks was sealed. On behalf of the covenant, Antiphilos and his cavalry general Menon von Pharsalus had sent a request for peace to the victorious Antipater, who, however, rejected him.

After the year 322 BC Antiphilos is no longer mentioned.
